Question for the Money Doctors

Question submitted on Feb 5, 2014.

I know someone that was renting a home did not have renters insurance but the house he was renting caught on fire because of a wood stove and he lost his wife and 4 dogs and 1 bird. What are his options? Is he entitled in compensation for the death of his wife through the home owners insurance?

HI, thank you for the question. I believe that your friend would have to sue the homeowner/landlord in this case to be able to collect any damages. If he wins the lawsuit, then the landlord's liability insurance may pay the damages. He would need to talk to a qualified attorney in his area if he wanted to pursue with a lawsuit. I hope this helps.
