How will I ever pay off my student loans?

As the cost of post-secondary education continues to increase and you take on further student loan indebtedness to pay for it, you may feel as if you are leaving the ivory tower with a mortgage on your back. You may be surprised to discover that some or all of your indebtedness can be forgiven if you are employed in certain public-service sectors, teach in teacher-shortage areas, or go into the Peace Corps.

If these choices aren't available to you, you must find a way to budget for your student loan payments. Review your household income and expenses. Can you reduce your spending on entertainment, luxuries, and discretionary items? If so, you can divert these saved funds toward monthly principal prepayment of your student loans, thus shortening the overall repayment term and saving on interest charges. You are always permitted to prepay the principal of student loans, partially or in full, without penalty.

Would consolidating your loans or refinancing your loans make the payment schedule easier? Check with your current lender to see what options you might have.

Are you in a position to take on a second, part-time job? The income from this job could be used to reduce your student loan indebtedness. Can you devote a tax refund, gift money, or inheritance to principal prepayment? Even infrequent payments of this sort will ultimately reduce your loan balance and save you both time (repaying the debt) and money (the interest on the debt).

TL, I love your comment!!! I graduated 30 years ago with my BS. I had the max amount in student loan debt then. It took me 10 years to pay it off. But without those loans I wouldn''t have the job I have today. Currently I am on the hook for PLUS loans for my children. Now I may spend the rest of my life paying those off (and my children have loans as well) but they will be well educated and able to better compete in this global economy. I am considering going back to school for my Masters. The only thing stopping me is the thought of having another $30,000 in student loan debt of my own. But without that availability, there would be NO OPTION. I would not be able to go to school at all!

I went to a great university and got my bachelors degree and then immediately went back to get another bachelors since I could not find a job with my other. I am now $125,000 dollars in debt! Yes. I will be paying it off till I die. I also have medical conditions that I need to get treatment for, which means more money. I know alot of people live pay check to pay check and I am ok doing that, but I cannot even do that. I am just increasing my credit card balance. I am in a rut. I don''t know what to do. I having been looking for second jobs, but have had no luck yet.

whoever posted the post before mine, maybe its not people with student loans that could help this economy but its the people who purposely go out and buy houses when they cannot afford them because they know that foreclosure will take a few years or the people who purposely max out there credit cards buying crap the don''t need because we have laws like bankruptcy. Instead people who are getting an education to better this country are the ones being punished. If we cannot afford our student loans payments, they garnish your wages. I am 26 years old and pay 1200 a month in student loans. I live with my parents and cannot afford to even begin to live on my own. I dont think you need to preach to the people with student loans that they need to be paying the government back. The government gets enough of our money through taxes, the least they could do would help people with so much outstanding student loan debt.

my total loan debt when I finished school thru state universities (including a Master''s) was 80K...11 years later thanks to compounding interest its 140K...I work in education in a teacher shortage area..but none of it applies to me, although I''m on a Teacher Salary Schedule, I''m a School Psychologist...the fed direct program doesn''t recognize that as a "Teacher," even though I''m limited to working in schools. I got my Masters b/c when I finished with my BA, that wasn''t enough to get a decent job...now I make 60K, rent my home and my loan payment is more than my rent. And I only have credit card debt because some months I can''t afford utilities and food....

Persistence is the key to anything. I have $35,566.21 in student loans to pay. My method? Pay $400 a month instead of the $253.29 I''m supposed to put up for minimum. With $100-a-week payments I will keep it steady and sound. I have just finished the arrangements for that: $1,000 in emergency funds, 6% of my income toward my 401(K), 2% of my income toward my IRA (yes! I have two retirement accounts) a $500 CD to use in case of a very rainy day and $5.00 on a per paycheck basis to cover a separate savings account, just in case, you never know.

And stillnotevenusing my degreeat my current job which is part time (but i am grearful for a job work for schools but dont qualify for loan forgiveness)i feel like its neverending debt been paying since i graduated and most of that money goes to interest so the principle balances have hardly gone down.

I agree with Chris. My husband and I have a combined student loan debt of close to $100,000. We have come to terms with the fact that we will both die with student loan debt and we have given up on ever owning our own home. Thank God that debt can''t be transferred to my children. Too bad I''m not a fortune 500 company too big to fail otherwise the government would just wipe out my debt. Boo to anyone who thinks simply getting a second job will help with this debt burden. How about reversing the wage trends of the last 30 years that have left most of the country impoverished and in debt while a teeny tiny fraction of Americans just roll around in cash. Doesn''t anyone stop to ask themselves why our parents could live comfortably with only one wage earner in the family but now we are telling our two wage earner families to each get second jobs??? Something is terribly wrong here when we have to go from one income to live well to three or four to just tread water.

Agreed, My husband and I are paying close to $700/mo in loan debt and I think every day about how I can pay them off. I mean that is a house payment! If we had that off our back life would be great, now it''s day to day.

Our parents lived comfortably because they did not have Smart Phones or DVR''s or High Speed internet or Starbucks and didn''t have access to high limit credit cards that were so commonly issued to anyone who breathed in the past decade. Banks did not get a handout, they got a loan that they are repaying with interest. Track your spending for 30 days and I''ll bet you will be surprised at the amount you are spending on meals out and entertainment, especially if you have kids. It''s way too easy to pick up a pizza or stop off at McDonalds after soccer practice. Your student loans helped you get the degree that got you your job and now you are complaining about having to pay it back? If everyone who has deferred their student loans to the government actually paid their debts, we might be able to help our government who helped you get an education.
