Additional Notes on Umbrella Liability Coverage

By definition, an umbrella policy is broad-based in its coverage. But no policy will cover everything. Depending on your circumstances, the following features may be important to you:

  • Some policies will indemnify your claim (i.e., reimburse your expenses after the fact). Others provide for immediate payment up to your policy's limit.
  • Some policies provide for defense against liability for "mental anguish"; others cover only actual damages.
  • Certain policies will cover you worldwide, while some are limited to North America only.
