Withholding Taxes from Your Social Security Benefit

Withholding Taxes from Your Social Security Benefit

If you choose, you can have taxes withheld from your Social Security benefit. Here's how to do it:

  • Complete IRS Form W-4V (Voluntary Withholding Request)
  • Choose the percentage of your monthly benefit you want withheld: 7 percent, 10 percent, 15 percent, or 25 percent
  • Sign and return the form to your local Social Security office

IRS Form W-4V is also used to stop or change your withholding should you choose to do so later.
