Question

My mother passed away last week. She was receiving ~$800 month benefit as part of my father''s SSI. She was a full-time housewife but worked for a few years about 40 years ago. Will my father be able to collect what she received, or since she was receiving part of his benefit it will be forfeited? I gather from the forum that the survivor doesn''t actually receive the spouse''s amount but instead the larger of the two? Thanks

Answer

I am very sorry to hear about your mother.  You are correct in your analysis.  Since your mother was receiving 1/2 of your father's SSI, when she passed, her $800 per month benefit is no longer available to your Dad.
