Question

I was wondering can a mortgage principal be paid off before the interest payments?

Answer

No. Interest is calculated on the balance of the principal. As you reduce the principal down towards zero, the interest will also be reduced on each payment. To pay off your mortgage sooner than scheduled, make additional payments and apply them directly to the principal.
