Question

I am a US citizen living in India. Do I need to pay social security tax on income earned in India? Where can I find more information about social security tax implications for a US citizen who is a resident (for tax purposes) of another country. India does not have a social security tax treaty with the US.

Thanks,

Bhavin

Answer

Hello Bhavin,

For expatriate Social Security tax issues (without a treaty), we recommend that you seek out a CPA firm that specializes in expatriate taxation.  General information may be obtained from the US Social Security Administration, the India Minister of Labour and Employment along with your Employer's Human Resource Department.
