Question

I am 75. If I marry a 35 year old woman with two minor children and adopt them, will they receive Social Security benefits after my death?

Answer

As long as you were legally married at the time of your death, your spouse may qualify for Survivor Benefits.  The children may qualify for survivor benefits if they are under age 18 (or 19 if they are still in high school) at the time of your death.

You can read up more about Survivor Benefits from Social Security by looking at SSA Publication 05-10084. You can pick up a copy at your local Social Security office or from the http://www.ssa.gov

If you want an estimate of the survivor benefits, you can get a calculation from the local Social Security office.
